ramblings : updates

Ok ok … I admit I haven’t been updating my blog regularly, it just so uneventful the past few weeks.

Just a couple of updates.

Anyway, I just returned from Hong Kong earlier this month after a fruitless camera gear hunt, but happily stuffed with HK delicacies and cheap clothes. It was kindoff a working-holiday trip… my gf went there to work, and i took the holiday for her, prowling the streets of HK for the best bargain on camera equipment.

One piece of advice : If you are planning to go to HK for camera shopping, bring cash. The prices there aren’t really that much cheaper compared to Singapore anymore, and when u add in a 2% credit card surcharge and an unknown exchange rate… lets just say that you may end up coming back empty handed.

My old webbie mirareste.com has officially died (I need to figure out how to get the domain transfer done) so I hope all the mail doesn’t go missing. If anyone is looking for me, and managed to find this blog, well, I can be reached at darrel@weddingsbydarrel.com (no surprises here, considering the website name)

Just shot a ROM last weekend. I’ve already dropped shooting ROMs from my service list and haven’t been shooting these for a couple of months already. But a close friend called me up on saturday morning to ask me to stand in for him as he wasn’t feeling well. (Yes, all of us ethical photographers have fellow photographers on standby). Anyway, Congratulations to the couple Ivan and Zane, and hope you like the photos (when you receive them). As requested, the photos will not be online. :)

Anyway, Sept-October is going to be a pretty busy month, with 3 weddings, a korea trip and project work thrown in. I hope I can manage to get some rest… In the meantime, I guess I have to practice my storing up sleep like how camels store water.

Snooze.

photos: Singapore Fireworks Celebration 2008

Cindy’s husband, Andy managed to get hold of 4 tickets for the singapore fireworks celebration display for yesterday. Unfortunately, Cindy is overseas, so she couldn’t make it, so Andy sold us the tickets.

Anyway, we’re having a burst of crappy weather the past 2 weeks, and yesterday was no exception. It was pouring in the afternoon, and when the time came for the fireworks, it has moderated to a slight drizzle, but still unpleasant.

My past few attempts at shooting fireworks were shot from the sheares bridge, which provided a fantastic spot for photography, but in the recent years, they have stopped allowing people up the bridge.

Shooting from the floating platform was actually quite a pain because of the range, as well as how quickly the place got smoked out yesterday. After firing off about 10 shots, the whole place was so smokey that all the shots came out crap, but here’s the few that could be salvaged with photoshop.

ramblings : What I’m busy with these days

I’ve been quite busy the past few days updating my blog and website…. yes, it still looks the same as before, but what I’m doing is slowly moving stuff over from my old web host and re-organising my stuff.

I’ve gotten a new domain name too !

Anyway, I’ll need to look thru all the photos in the blog and re-link them again … :S

Tasks :

  1. Move my old website stuff to this new host, reorganise the images, set up the gallery, and re-link them to my blog. BEFORE AUGUST.
  2. Re-encode the wedding slideshows to support full screen (new feature) YAAAY
  3. My Japan Album… ARRRGGGHHH
  4. Wedding Shoot … :)

Ta for now.

photos: mystery trip

I just touched down this morning from a 4-day trip organised by my company for its Annual Financial Year kickoff. We were told to fly into Beijing, dress warm and wear flat soles shoes. The whole arrangement was quite hush hush. No one knew what was the program for the kickoff, but we all assumed it would probably take place somewhere in Beijing.

We flew in on thursday, and spent a night near our office, and boarded the company chartered bus at around 10. What we didn’t expect was a long grueling butt-flattening 10 hour bus ride…

Night view of that night’s acommodations. Its was pretty much dark by the time we arrived… around 7ish. We had a magnificent view of the night sky. I just wish I brought my tripod so I could shoot some star trails…

The next morning… look at the space available, and the tiny people got get an idea of the scale.

Yes, we were at the grasslands. A 10 hour bus ride brought us to the lovely (but shockingly freezing cold) inner mongolia region.

I didn’t really bring that much equipment with me, nor took many photos but it was indeed quite an experience visiting the grasslands. The air was fresh, and the sight of the expansive grasslands were soothing. I just wished we had better… or at least warmer accomodations … brrr…

The thing I need most now is … my bed, especially after a 6 hour+ return bus trip and a 6 hour delayed flight back to Singapore.
