Earthquake

The talk of the town this week would probably be the earthquake that left many office workers scrambling out of their buildings.

The quake happened on Wed around 11+ in the island of sumatra.

I have to admit, this is the first earthquake that I’ve actually felt. I was in the meeting room with my colleagues (18th Floor Suntec), and Jeff was the first person to feel it. It was kinda like this…

“Ooi darrel. stop shaking the table larr”
* puts down both legs on the floor and stops shaking my legs*…
“ermm … stop liao leh …”

*earthquake !*

Of course, the silly part about this was
1) Suntec announcement system saying “minor incident, do not panic while we investigate this”
2) The people evacuated the building, and gathered at the door … sure, when the building collapses its just going to completely miss them.

Of course, jeff was glad that it happened when he was in office, not when he was at home showering.

“Can you imagine when they find your body, your all naked wearing only a shower cap and still have soap suds on you ? … Tak handsome larr. want to die also die in a nicer way”

Of course, there was another earthquake incident a couple of years ago when I was still in the Silicon valley. There was this major quake near LA and the tremors could be felt in the office. Naturally, people left the building. I can’t remember what I was working on, and I just couldn’t feel the ground shake.

Another of my friends Rohit called my cubicle phone and said (jokingly)
“Hey dude, what are you still doing up there”
“huh ? what ?”
“there’s an earthquake … everyone’s downstairs …”
“aha … oohh … ok, coming down now then”
“err … could u pop over to my cube and grab my jacket, its freezing out here”.

sure … some friend I have. If he wasn’t freezing his butt off, I’d be trapped in a collapsing building.
